Who was Stanley R. Tupper?
Stanley Roger Tupper was a U.S. Representative from Maine. Born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Tupper was educated in Boothbay Harbor public schools, Hebron Academy, Hebron, Maine. Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, and LaSalle Extension University, Chicago, Illinois.
He served in the United States Navy September 1944-March 1946. He served as member of board of selectmen of Boothbay Harbor in 1948, and served as chairman in 1949. He was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Maine in 1949, in the Federal district court in 1950, and before the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1952. He served as member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1953 to 1954, as assistant state attorney general from 1959 to 1960, and as Maine state commissioner of the Department of Sea and Shore Fisheries from 1953 to 1957.
Tupper was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-seventh and the two succeeding Congresses. He was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninetieth Congress in 1966. He was appointed United States Commissioner General with rank of Ambassador to the Canadian World Exhibition in 1967. He resumed the practice of law in 1968. United States Commissioner, International Commission for Northeast Atlantic Fisheries from 1975 to 1976. He died on January 6, 2006, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
