Who is Thomas Middelhoff?

Thomas Middelhoff was elected to the Board of Directors of The New York Times Company

in 2003.

Dr. Middelhoff has served as Chief Executive Officer of KarstadtQuelle AG, a German

retailer, since May 2005.

Previously, Dr. Middelhoff served as both the Non-Executive Chairman of KarstadtQuelle

AG, which he became in 2004, and a managing director at Investcorp Ltd., the global

investment firm, which he joined in 2003. From 1997 to 2002, he was chairman and

chief executive of Bertelsmann AG, which he joined in 1986.

In 1999, Dr. Middelhoff co-founded and participated in Global Business Dialogue

for e-Commerce, a worldwide, CEO-led business initiative to assist in the creation

of a policy framework for the development of a global online economy. He is also

the non-executive chairman of Thomas Cook AG, a German company which is a joint

venture between KarstadtQuelle and Lufthansa.

Dr. Middelhoff serves on the boards of KarstadtQuelle AG and APCOA Parking AG, both

German companies. Other companies of which he is a board member are The Polestar

Corporation, a British company, and Fitch Ratings, a U.S./U.K. company, which is

a wholly owned subsidiary of Fimalac, S.A., a French company.

Dr. Middelhoff also serves on the board of Bewerbungskomitee Leipzig 2012, the committee

supporting the city of Leipzig's application to host the Olympic Games in 2012.
