He umpired 4 Test matches, making his debut in the match between Australia and England in Melbourne on 1 January to 6 January 1892, standing with Jim Phillips. His last match, also with ‘Dimboola Jim’ as colleague, was in Melbourne on 1 March to 6 March 1895.
