Who is Umabaisaheb Khanderao Dabhade?
Umabaisaheb Khanderao Dabhade, was the only woman to become Sarsenapati or Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha Army in 1732.
Umabaisaheb Dabhade was the daughter of Abhonkar Devrao Thoke Deshmukh. She was married to Sarsenapati Khanderao Dabhade and was the youngest of the three wives. She bore Khanderao three sons Trimbakrao, Yashwantrao and Sawai Baburao and three daughters Shahbaisaheb, Durgabaisaheb and Anandibaisaheb.
She built 470 steps on the hill to reach the temple of Goddess Saptashringi near Nasik in 1710.
She expired on 28 November 1753 at Nadgemodi in Pune. The Samadhi of Sarsenapati Umabaisaheb Khanderao Dabhade is situated at the "Shrimant Sarsenapati Dabhade Shri Baneshwar Mandir" at Talegaon Dabhade.
