Who is Zecharia Dershowitz?
Zecharia Dershowitz, known as Reb Zecharia, was a Jewish man who immigrated to the United States in 1888 from Galicia, Poland at the age of twenty three. He founded one of the first Yiddish communities in America and the first Chassidus synagogue in Williamsburg, New York. He simultaneously utilized the synagogue in order to save other Jews in Europe from the Holocaust by providing them with a means of immigration to the US by hiring them as a Rabbi and firing them soon afterwards.
His son, Louis Dershowitz, was one of the three founders of the first Yeshiva in Brooklyn, Yeshiva Torah V’Dass.
