Who is Prem Rawat?

Prem Pal Singh Rawat (Hindi: प्रेम पाल सिंह रावत; born December 10, 1957), also known as Maharaji teaches a meditation practice he calls Knowledge. The core of his teaching is that the human need for fulfillment can be satisfied by turning inward to discover a constant source of joy. He emphasizes a direct experience of transcendence, rather than a body of dogma.

In the early 1970s Rawat In 1971,traveled to the West, and Divine Light Mission, under his leadership, was judged to be the fastest growing new religious movement in the West.

He later abandoned the Indian aspects of his teachings to make his message more widely accessible. The Divine Light Mission was disbanded in the West in the early 1980s, succeeded by the organizations Elan Vital (1983), The Prem Rawat Foundation (2001), and Words of Peace Global (2009).
