Who is Abul Kalam Azad?

Abul Kalam Azad Bachchu, is a Bangladeshi politician and cleric who was once a rokan of Jamaat-e-Islami and a televangelist. He is widely known as 'Bachchu Razakar', because of participating in a paramilitary force allied with the Pakistan Army during the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh.

He was the first of nine prominent Jamaat suspects accused of war crimes by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 of Bangladesh to be convicted for crimes against humanity, including murder of unarmed civilians and rape committed during the War. On January 21, 2013 Azad was sentenced to hang for his crimes.

For years, Bachchu had anchored an Islamic television show, called Apnar Jiggasa, or Your Questions on a private TV channel in Bangladesh. He discussed questions of Islam and its interpretation.
