Who was Archduke Rainer Ferdinand of Austria?
Archduke Rainer Ferdinand of Austria was an Austrian prime minister. He was a son of Archduke Rainer Joseph of Austria and Princess Elisabeth of Savoy.
In 1852, he married his cousin Archduchess Maria Carolina of Austria, daughter of Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen. The marriage was a very happy one, and the couple was probably the most popular amongst the Habsburg family. The marriage remained childless.
Rainer was also a general in the Imperial Army, and very interested in art and science, in particular the emerging Papyrology. He donated his Fayum collection in 1899 to the Austrian National Library.
