She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as the daughter of Stanley Wells Adams, a Welsh-born accountant, and his Canadian wife, Lillian Adams. Educated in Canada and England, Claire Adams worked briefly as a nurse with the Red Cross during World War I.
