Who is Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg?

Marianne Bernadotte, Countess of Wisborg, is a Swedish actress and philanthropist who in 1961 married Count Sigvard Bernadotte of Wisborg, a former Prince of Sweden. She has been noted for her work supporting causes such as dyslexia, physical disabilities, and children's eye care and as a patron of the arts. As founder of The Sigvard & Marianne Bernadotte Research Foundation for Children’s Eye care, The International Research Foundation for Children’s Eye care Inc., The Marianne Bernadotte Scholarship Fund for Prominent Dyslexia Research and Education, and The Marianne & Sigvard Bernadotte Arts Fund, among other civic commitments, she actively supports public and voluntary service. Marianne Bernadotte was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Karolinska Institute in 1998 for her commitment to research in dyslexia and child ophthalmology and an Honorary Doctorate by the Bologna University Institute of Psychology in recognition of her contribution to dyslexia research in 2006.

One example of Marianne Bernadotte’s involvement in the world of Arts is the Marianne and Sigvard Bernadotte Arts Fund that she created in 1982 to mark Sigvard Bernadotte’s seventy-fifth birthday. Grants are awarded each year to young scholars in music, theatre, design and art. The scholarships provide young artists with the opportunity to develop their talents at an early stage in their careers, many of whom have later become very successful.
