John Bunyan

Preacher, Author

1628 – 1688

Who was John Bunyan?

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher, who is well known for his book The Pilgrim's Progress. Though he became a non-conformist and member of an Independent church, and although he has been described both as a Baptist and as a Congregationalist, he himself preferred to be described simply as a Christian. He is remembered in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on August 30, and on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church on August 29. Some other Churches of the Anglican Communion, such as the Anglican Church of Australia, honour him on the day of his death together with St Aidan of Lindisfarne.

Famous Quotes:

  • One leak will sink a ship: and one sin will destroy a sinner.
  • Nothing can render affliction so insupportable as the load of sin. Would you then be fitted for afflictions? Be sure to get the burden of your sins laid aside, and then what affliction soever you may meet with will be very easy to you.
  • If we have not quiet in our minds, outward comfort will do no more for us than a golden slipper on a gouty foot.
  • He who bestows his goods upon the poor shall have as much again, and ten times more.
  • Hanging is too good for him said Mr. Cruelty.
  • In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
  • The more he cast away the more he had.
  • Temptations, when we first meet them, are like a lion that roared at Samson; but if we overcome them, the next time we see them we shall find a nest of honey within them.
  • There was a castle called Doubting Castle, the owner whereof was Giant Despair.
  • My sword I give to him that shall succeed me in my pilgrimage, and my courage and skill to him that can get it.
