Who was Frank Ryan?
Frank Ryan was a publicity director and sports announcer who was the first play-by-play announcer and PR director for the Boston Bruins.
Ryan served as the Bruins PR director and radio announcer from 1924-1952. He called play-by-play for home games and recreated road games from telegraph reports. During intermissions, Ryan's brother-in-law would provide updates in French for French Canadians living in New England.
In addition to his work with the Bruins, Ryan also served as a reporter Herald Traveler, hosted a nightly sports program on WAAB, worked as an assessor for the City of Boston, and did public relations for Suffolk Downs and the Harvard University athletic department.
