Who was Franziska Tiburtius?
Franziska Tiburtius was a German doctor, one of the first two women to qualify as a doctor in imperial Germany.
Refused entry to German medical faculties, Tiburtius studied for medicine in Zurich and in 1876 passed her examinations with distinction. That year she completed an internship with the gynaecologist Franz von Winckel in Dresden. With her fellow student Emilie Lehmus, she set up private practice in Berlin. Despite sustained opposition, their clinic succeeded in attracting a large clientele.
