Who was Joaquin Murphey?

Earl James "Joaquin" Murphey was an American steel guitarist. Nicknamed "Joaquin" due to his personality, Murphey was an "innovative" and influential steel guitarist who helped to define the sound of Western Swing. He started professionally with the Spade Cooley band while a teenager. Being a musician also brought him film appearances.

1946: leaves Cooley to join Andy Parker and the Plainsmen

1947: receives a steel guitar custom-built by Paul Bigsby

1980 inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame

His contemporaries included Herb Remington, Leon McAuliffe, Noel Boggs and Speedy West.
