Who was John Leveson-Gower?

John Leveson-Gower was an officer of the Royal Navy and a politician. He saw service during the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, rising to the rank of rear-admiral. He also sat as Member of Parliament for several constituencies, and was a junior Lord of the Admiralty.
