Who is Lew Yih Wey?

Lew Yih Wey is a Malaysian swimmer, who specialized in long-distance freestyle, backstroke, and individual medley events. She won four medals, including the gold for the backstroke event, at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

Lew qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after smashing a national record, and reached a B-standard time of 4:50.52 at the Malaysian Open Championships in Bukit Jalil. Her winning time at the championships also erased the national mark of 4:51.01, set by Siow Yi Ting at the 2003 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam. She swam in the first heat of the women's 400 m individual medley, against four other competitors including Thailand's Nimitta Thaveesupsoonthorn, who previously won the gold medal at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in Manila. Lew finished the race only in third place and thirty-fourth overall, outside her national record of 4:55.83.
