Lorentz Florentz Friedrich von Crell
– 1816
Who was Lorentz Florentz Friedrich von Crell?
In 1778, he published the first periodical journal of chemistry. His journal had a long title, but it was just known like the "Crell's Annalen". He stopped to publish it because of concurence : the journal of Alexander Nicolaus and Adolph Ferdinand Gehlen, the "Journal of pratical chemistry" (Journal für praktische Chemie) became too strong.
Von Crell translate a lot of Richard Kirwan's articles, who was a supporter of phlogiston theory. Von Crell defended this theory untill 1711 and never openly accepted it was wrong ( despite Lavoisier's experiences). He elected into the German Academy of Science Leopoldina in 1778 ; in 1780 the duke of Brunswick made him a Bergrat (administrator of mining) and in 1781 he was nobled by the emperor Leopold II (his name changed from Crell to von Crell).
