Who is Monsurat Sunmonu?

Monsurat Sunmonu is the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Nigeria. She became the first female Speaker in the history of the House on the 10th of June 2011. She is the member of the House of Assembly representing Oyo East and Oyo West.

As an indigene of Oyo town, Oyo State, she contested on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria and won all 20 available Wards in her constituencies. Her philanthropic nature led to her rise in Oyo State politics and she is widely known and highly regarded amongst the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, where she was resident for over 30 years. Monsurat Sunmonu is revered as one of the leading women in Nigeria.

In 2012, she was voted as the vice-Chair of the Conference of Speakers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which consists of the 36 Speakers of each State in the Federation. She has also won many philanthropic and performance related awards, both prior to taking office and since.

Monsurat Sunmonu is the daughter of Late Pa Akeeb Alagbe Sunmonu and Late Princess Amudalat Jadesola Sunmonu and is of royal decent in Oyo kingship.
