Who is Nieh Pin-chieh?
Nieh Pin-chieh is a Taiwanese swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. At age sixteen, Nieh made her official debut for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, representing Chinese Taipei. She swam in the fifth heat of the 50 m freestyle, against seven other competitors, including Slovenia's Sara Isakovič, and Puerto Rico's Vanessa García, who won in this heat. Nieh finished the race in fourth place and forty-first overall, with a personal best time of 27.09 seconds, tying her position with Hungary's Zsuzsanna Csobánki.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Nieh swam in the second heat of the 100 m freestyle event, against five other competitors, including three from Southeast Asia. She came only in fifth place by nearly five eighths of a second, behind Christel Simms of the Philippines, with a time of 57.28 seconds. Nieh, however, failed to advance into the semi-finals, as she placed forty-third out of forty-nine swimmers in the overall rankings.
