Who is Otinielu Tausi?

Otinielu Tauteleimalae Tausi is a politician from Tuvalu for the constituency of Nanumanga. He served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Tuvalu from 2003 until 2006, and has also held a position as the Deputy Prime Minister of Tuvalu.

Following the general election on 25 November 1993 the subsequent parliament elected Kamuta Latasi as prime minister on 10 December 1993 and Otinielu Tausi was appointed the deputy prime minister.

He was not re-elected in the 2010 general election. Dr Falesa Pitoi, who was elected, became ill and unable to attend Parliament. In late 2013, following an assessment of Dr Pitoi’s health, the Governor-General declared a vacancy for the constituency of Nanumanga. The polling date for the by-election occurred on 14 January 2014. Otinielu Tausi was the successful candidate. Following his election, he chose to join the parliamentary majority of Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga.
