Who was Sir John Fowell, 2nd Baronet?

Sir John Fowell, 2nd Baronet was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1659 and 1677. He fought in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War.

Fowell was born at Fowellscombe, the son of Sir Edmund Fowell, 1st Baronet and his wife Margaret Paulett, daughter of Sir Anthony Paulett of Hinton St George. He was a colonel in the Regiment of Foot in the Parliamentary army in the Civil War and was governor of Totnes.

In 1659, Fowell was elected Member of Parliament for Ashburton in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Ashburton in 1660 for the Convention Parliament and re-elected MP for Ashburton in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He held the seat until his death in 1677 at the age of 53. In 1666 he became Vice-Admiral of Devon and in 1674 he inherited the baronetcy.

Fowell married Elizabeth Chichester, daughter of Sir John Chichester of Raleigh Devon. He was succeeded in the baronetcy by his son John.
