Who is Vaughan Dryden?

Michael Harrison in his book, 'London by Gaslight' quotes - My old friend, Vaughan Dryden, was employed by the Aldine Press in the 1890's, to churn out the raw material of boy's magazines at 3/6d a thousand. But he was expected to do - and did - 30,000 words a week; so that he never took home less than five guineas a week - "And I lived better on that five guineas" said Vaughan," than I could on a hundred today"
