Who is Walter P. Unger?

Walter P. Unger, M.D., F.R.C.P., F.A.C.P., A.B.H.R.S., is a dermatologist specializing in hair transplantation and known for his pioneering investigations in modern hair restoration surgery as well as his extensive international contributions to physician education.

A disciple of Dr. Norman Orentreich, who is considered the father of modern hair transplantation, Dr. Unger became one of the first physicians in the world to limit his practice entirely to hair transplantation. In 1979, he edited “Hair Transplantation,” the first comprehensive multi-physician reference textbook including international contributions on alternative methods, and dedicated entirely to the growing field of hair transplantation surgery. Described as “The Bible” of hair transplantation by the President of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, the fifth, and most-recent, edition of this updated text features contributions from 93 physicians representing 22 countries worldwide.

Advancing Dr. Orentreich’s principle of “donor dominance”, Dr. Unger’s study in 1994 helped shape surgeons’ understanding of the limitations of the donor area from which hair follicles area harvested.
