Who was William Stewart?
William Anthony Stewart was an English cricketer who played as a right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper.
Stewart made his first-class debut for Oxford University in 1869 against the Marylebone Cricket Club, and played for Oxford University five times in the 1869 season, including the University Match against Cambridge University.
In the same season, Stewart made his debut for Hampshire against the Marylebone Cricket Club, his only game for Hampshire in the 1869 season.
In 1870, Stewart played two matches for Oxford University, including his second University Match. He then disappeared from first-class cricket until returning in 1878 for a second and final match for Hampshire against MCC. In his nine matches as a wicketkeeper, he made 9 stumpings and took 15 catches.
Ordained in the Church of England, Stewart died at Twyford, Hampshire at the age of 36.
