Who is Óscar Ortiz?
Óscar Ortiz is the mayor of the Salvadoran city of Santa Tecla. He has served in that position since 2000, and was re-elected in 2003 and 2006. Ortiz is a member of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front the main left wing party in El Salvador. In 2003 Ortiz lost the party's primary vote to Schafik Handal by 47% to 53% to decide who would be the party's candidate in the 2004 presidential election.
During El Salvador's civil war from 1980 to 1992, Ortiz was a combatant with the Popular Liberation Forces - Farabundo Martí, one of the five organizations that comprised the FMLN. In 2012, the FMLN selected Ortiz as a Vice Presidential candidate for the 2014 Presidential elections.
