Who was Atropates?
Atropates was a Persian nobleman who served Darius III, then Alexander the Great, and eventually founded an independent kingdom and dynasty that was named after him. Diodorus refers to him as 'Atrapes', while Quintus Curtius erroneously names him 'Arsaces'.
