Who is Elizabeth Spiers?

Elizabeth Spiers, a native of Wetumpka, Alabama, is the founder of Dead Horse Media, which publishes Dealbreaker, a gossip site about Wall Street, AbovetheLaw, a gossip site about law, Fashionista, a gossip site about fashion, and Supermogul, a now defunct business management site. She became the editor of The New York Observer in 2011.

Spiers left the site abruptly April 19, 2007 citing differences with her partners over launching new properties according to BusinessWeek.

After graduating from Duke University in 1999 with a degree in public policy, Spiers headed to Wall Street, but soon found herself in the fast-growing blog industry. Spiers is perhaps most famous as the founding editor of Gawker.com, an influential New York media gossip blog, but also worked briefly as the editor in chief of mediabistro.com, a site offering resources for media professionals.

Since then, Spiers has amassed a number of notable blog sites, leading New York Times' DealBook to write of her, "It is clear that an online empire is on Elizabeth Spiers’s mind."

Prior to mediabistro, she was a contributing writer and editor at New York magazine.
