Who was Eugene O'Callaghan?

Eugene O'Callaghan was a Roman Catholic cleric. He was ordained in the Archdiocese of Armagh as a priest on 21 June 1913. Having served as curate in Armagh City for a period, he was appointed as Administrator of the Cathedral Parish of Armagh, responsible for building the parish church of St. Malachy's there. He was named parish priest of St. Peter's parish in Drogheda in 1938.

He was appointed the Roman Catholic Bishop of Clogher in Ireland on 30 January 1943, following the death of Dr. Patrick McKenna, on 7 February 1942. He was ordained bishop on 4 April 1943. His Episcopal Motto was Ad Jesum per Mariam

He attended the opening session of the Second Vatican Council in October 1962. He retired as bishop on 28 November 1969 having served as Bishop of Clogher for more than a quarter of a century. He was appointed titular bishop of Britonia on the same day. He resigned this appointment on 26 January 1971 in accordance with newly adopted prototcols for the style of retired bishops in the post Vatican II era and died as Bishop Emeritus of Clogher on 21 May 1973. O'Callaghan was succeeded by Patrick Mulligan.
