Who is Flemish Bastard?
Due to his multitude of connections between settler populations, Canaqueese is referred to by various names including “The Flemish Bastard,” “Bastard Flamand,” “The Dutch Bastard,” “Smits Jan,” and “Smith’s John.” He was an important intermediary between the French, Dutch and Mohawks during the Beaver Wars and participated in numerous attempts to reach a peace agreement between the Mohawks and the French.
