Who was Leo Joachim Frachtenberg?
Leo Joachim Frachtenberg was an anthropologist who studied the Native American languages. He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1910 under Franz Boas on the Coosan language of Oregon. Other languages he worked on included Chimakuan and Shasta. Like Boas and his contemporary Edward Sapir, he was Jewish. Frachtenberg helped Franz Boas to produce the Bureau of American Ethnology Handbook of American Indian Languages, BAE Bulletin 40, and also wrote "Alsea Texts and Myths", BAE Bulletin 67.
