Francis Aglionby

Who was Francis Aglionby?

Francis Aglionby was an English Whig politician.

Aglionby stood for election to Parliament in Cumberland Western at a by-election in 1833 and again at the 1835 general election, but without success. He won a seat at the 1837 general election, when he was elected as Member of Parliament for Cumberland Eastern, and held the seat until his death in 1840.

He was the son of John Orfeur Yates and his mother was an Aglionby. However, he inherited estates from one of his mother's sisters, but on condition that he change his last name to Aglionby, which he did.

Aglionby served in the Cumberland militia, where he rose to the rank of Major. He had studied law, but did not follow that profession. He served as chairman of the county's quarter sessions in Cumberland from 1818 until his death.
