Francisco Niculoso de Pisa
Artist, Visual Artist
– 1529
Who was Francisco Niculoso de Pisa?
Italian painter who spent considerable time in Spain and Portugal and was involved in producing some of the first ceramic tile paintings known as Azulejos in Portugal. He it was, apparently, who brought the coloured oxides from Italy to Spain which enable the addition of colour to ceramics, which became such a strong tradition throughout both Spain and Portugal. These tiles, in turn were shipped at an early date to Spanish and Portuguese possessions in Latin America and elsewhere. Several of his panels are conserved in the Seville museum "Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla".
