Who was Fred Bramley?

Fred Bramley was the second General Secretary of the British Trade Union Congress.

Born in Pool near Otley in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bramley worked as a cabinet maker and joined the Independent Labour Party. Also active in the Clarion movement, he became an official in the National Amalgamated Furnishing Trade union, then TUC assistant secretary in 1917 and general secretary in 1923. He joined a delegation to the Soviet Union in 1924 and died, in office, in 1925.
