Who was Fred O'Shea?
Fred O'Shea was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League.
O'Shea, a member of the 1909 Brunswick VFA premiership team, joined Essendon in 1910 and was on the wing when they won the 1911 VFL Grand Final. The following season, O'Shea kicked the winning goal in a final against Carlton which put his club into another Grand Final. He had injured his knee in the first quarter and had to be carried off but returned late in the game and despite being unable to walk, was assigned to the goalsquare and booted the winner with his only kick. Due to his injury, he missed out on the premiership decider and in 1913 he returned to Brunswick.
