Who was Fred Dewhurst Yates?
Fred Dewhurst Yates was an English chess master (Grandmaster by today's standard) who won the British Chess Championship on six occasions. He started a career in accountancy, but in 1909, abandoned it in favour of becoming a professional chess player and journalist. Although most biographers give Fred's first name as "Frederick" his birth certificate shows that he was Christened Fred Dewhirst Yates.
