Who is Gail R. Martin?
Professor Gail R. Martin, is in charge of the developmental biology program at the University of California, San Francisco. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and is the President of the Society for Developmental Biology.
In 1981 Martin, working at the University of California, San Francisco, and Martin Evans and Matthew Kaufman, working at the University of Cambridge, England, separately and simultaneously discovered techniques for extracting stem cells from mouse embryos. Martin is attributed with coining the term "embryonic stem cell".
