Fra' Gregorio Carafa was born in Castelvetere in Calabria, Italy and was the 62nd Prince and Grand Master of the Order of Malta from 1680 to 1690. Italian by birth, he was elected Grand Master after the death of Nicolas Cotoner. In 1683, three years after he became Grandmaster, Auberge d'Italie was renovated and the facade was rebuilt in Baroque style. A bronze bust of Carafa was placed on a prominent position over the front door of the Auberge where it remains to this day. He died in 1690 and he is buried in the Italian Chapel in St. John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta, Malta.
