Who was Howard Payne?
Andrew Howard Payne was an Olympic athlete from England. He specialised in the hammer throw events during his career.
Born in Benoni, Gauteng Payne represented Great Britain in three consecutive Olympic Games, starting in 1964. He previously competed for Northern Rhodesia. Payne claimed the gold medal for England in the men's hammer throw event at three consecutive Commonwealth Games: 1962, 1966 and 1970.
He died in Birmingham aged 60. Payne was at one time married to discus thrower Rosemary Payne.
