Who was Jim Manning?

James H. Manning was a Major League Baseball player and manager. Though he was primarily an outfielder, Manning was an early utility player, playing games at three infield positions throughout his career. He played four years in the National League with the Boston Beaneaters and the Detroit Wolverines, then played one year in the American Association with the Kansas City Cowboys. He managed the Washington Senators in their inaugural season.

After retiring from playing baseball, he was hired as the first manager of the Washington Senators of the new American League in 1901, but he resigned after only one season in which the Senators went 61–73. He never managed again, and died at age 67 in Edinburg, Texas.
