Who was Kozma Spassky-Avtonomov?

Kozma Fyodorovich Spassky-Avtonomov was a Russian researcher of Baku and along with his brother Mikhail one of the pioneers of climatology and meteorology. Kozma, a member of Russian Geographic Society, was keen on both branches, but his main interests were voyages and study of local lore.

Having buried his wife in Tiflis, he arrived to Baku with children on July 27, 1847 according to official instruction. Spassky-Avtonomov became the head of Baku Quarantine Customs Service. In this time the instrumental studies of the Caspian Sea level, started in 1830, have been continued. Spassky-Avtonomov began studying Baku in 1847, leaving numerous accounts on the city and its inhabitants.
