Who is Lenín Moreno?
Lenín Voltaire Moreno Garcés was Vice President of Ecuador from 2007 to 2013, serving under President Rafael Correa. His election as Vice President was notable because as a paraplegic, Moreno was one of the world’s few disabled national leaders. This paralysis gives him insight into the needs and concerns of disabled people, especially those in Ecuador and other developing countries. Once in office, Moreno initiated important changes that improved the lives of disabled people throughout the country, and increasingly, in other countries as well. For his work providing respect and dignity to handicapped people he was nominated for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.
