Who is Leonard J. Cerullo?

Leonard J. Cerullo is a board-certified neurosurgeon and founder/director of the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch. Additionally, he is a co-medical director of the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago, founded in 2003 and formerly known as the Neurologic & Orthopedic Institute of Chicago. Cerullo also is a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Rush Medical College.

Cerullo’s specialty certification is neurological surgery, granted in 1979 by The American Board of Neurological Surgery. He was elected to the Society of Neurological Surgeons in 2001, and is an active member as of 2008.

Cerullo was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, to Leornard Frank Cerullo, and Marion née Yori, who met at Hazleton General Hospital. The middle child in a large family, his mother was a nurse, while his father was an electrical contractor.

Cerullo graduated from Georgetown University in 1966, majoring in English and minoring in philosophy. He spent the following summer studying Japanese literature in Japan. He began his medical career as a student at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earning his M.D. in 1970.
