Who was Louise Arner?
Louise Boyd American explorer who led many expeditions to Greenland and other areas of the Arctic. She was the first woman to fly over the North Pole. Boyd sailed to the Arctic for the first time while on a search and rescue mission to find Ronald Amundsen. She continued to visit the Arctic regularly for the rest of her life. Boyd lead many scientific research expeditions in Greenland as well as in the Arctic and was supported by the American Geographical Society. Boyd also was a photographer, documenting the areas in which she was conducting research. 1938 was the year Boyd reached the furthest point in Greenland that any human had reached without the use of submarines or other technology. Boyd got her chance to fly over the North Pole in 1955. Boyd died in San Diego, California.
