Who is Lucy Hartley?

Lucy Hartley Ph.D. is a British Associate Professor of English attached to the English Department of the University of Michigan. Her special interests include nineteenth-century studies, intellectual and cultural history, art and politics, history and philosophy of science and interdisciplinarity theory and practice.

Her most noted book to date remains Physiognomy and the Meaning of Expression in Nineteenth-Century Culture and is currently working on her forthcoming project The Democracy of the Beautiful, 1840-1900: 'The Sense of the Common'.
