Who is Mary Simms Oliphant?
Mary Simms Oliphant was a South Carolina historian famous for her History of South Carolina that was taught in the public schools for over sixty years. She is also a member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame. Oliphant was an apologist for slavery, and her pro-slavery textbooks were used to teach history in South Carolina for half a century.
