Who was Moses Isserles?

Moses Isserles, also spelled Moshe Isserlis, was an eminent Ashkenazic rabbi, talmudist, and posek, renowned for his fundamental work of Halakha, entitled ha-Mapah, an inline commentary on the Shulchan Aruch, upon which his "great reputation as a halakist and codifier rests chiefly." He is also well known for his Darkhei Moshe commentary on the Tur. Isserles is also referred to as the Rema, the Hebrew acronym for Rabbi Moses Isserles.
