Who was Nie Gannu?
Nie Gannu was a modern Chinese essayist. He was born in Jingshan County, Hubei province, and studied in the USSR in the 1920s. In 1927 he returned to China, and joined the League of Left-Wing Writers four years later. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Nie, Xia Yan, Song Yunbin, Meng Chao and Qin Si worked as redactors of the magazine Yecao. During the Chinese Civil War, his prose collections In blood and Muttering were published. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he turned to Hong Kong to run the Wen Wei Po newspaper. He was imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. He died on 26 March 1988 in Beijing.
