Who is Vincent J. Gentile?

Vincent J. Gentile is a member of the New York City Council representing District 43, which comprises the Southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights and parts of Bensonhurst.

Gentile chairs the Select Committee on Libraries in the Council, and serves on the Aging, Cultural Affairs, Finance, and Public Safety committees.

Gentile first won public office in 1996, when he was able to capitalize upon internal divisions within the Republican Party and win a 3-way race for the 23rd District in the New York State Senate.

Gentile would go on to serve three terms before being defeated by then City Councilman Martin J. "Marty" Golden in 2002. As a result of his defeat, Gentile entered into the special election to fill the vacancy on the city council that resulted from Golden's victory; Gentile won the special election and has held the seat ever since. Effectively, the elections resulted in Golden and Gentile swapping seats.

Prior to his involvement in electoral politics Gentile was a prosecutor in the District Attorney's office for 8 years.

He has a B.A. from Cornell University and a J.D. from Fordham Law School.
