Who is Vinod Kinariwala?

Vinod Kinariwala was a student at Gujarat College in the city of Ahmedabad. On 9 August 1942, the first day of the Quit India Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, Kinariwala was shot dead by a British officer for trying to hoist the Indian flag while protesting in front of the college. When the British officer, standing just a few feet from him, asked him to put the flag down, Kinariwala replied defiantly that he was not going to do anything of the sort. The officer shot him. Vinod Kinariwala was 18 years old at the time.

Later in 1947, Veer Vinod Kinariwala Memorial and his statue were inaugurated inside college campus by Jai Prakash Narayan in his memory.

The road where he was shot is named after him as Shahid Veer Kinariwala Marg.

Every year on 9 August, the All India Democratic students organization pay tribute at his memorial.
