Who was William Ernest Miles?

William Ernest Miles was an English surgeon known for the Miles' operation: an abdomino-perineal excision for rectal cancer.

Former surgery for rectal cancer was perineal excision, that was less efficient in removing neoplastic tissue but easier to perform; so at beginning mortality related to new operation was higher. Lately, with improvement of surgical techniques and surgery-related medical therapy, Miles' operation mortality felt off and become gold standard for surgical treatment of rectal cancer.
